Trexo Robotics
First Steps Wellness Centre
Trexo Robotics provides robotic walking devices (exoskeletons) designed for children with mobility challenges. At our clinic, we use the Trexo Plus that allows therapists to support and guide children as they practice walking in a safe and engaging way.
*Please note that Trexo Robotics is only offered at the Regina, Saskatchewan facility.
Who Is It For?
Trexo can be used by children with a wide range of conditions that make walking difficult or inaccessible. This includes children with cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), brain or spinal cord injuries, and other neuromuscular conditions. Trexo provides an opportunity for supported, repetitive stepping and upright mobility, helping children participate in movement in a safe and engaging way.
Sizing
We currently have a Medium Trexo available at our facility. This device is designed to support children with a hip-to-floor measurement of 43–53 cm, hip-to-knee measurement of 21–24 cm, and knee-to-floor measurement of 22–29 cm, with a maximum user weight of 80lbs.
Impact / Benefits
- Allows children to take many more steps than conventional therapy would allow, which may help with strength, motor learning, bone health, and possibly gait improvement over time.
- Supports posture, trunk control, encourages upright walking, and provides a way for children who cannot walk independently to experience overground walking.
- Provides data feedback (step counts, initiation, time walking, etc.) for therapists and families to track progress.
How Does It Work?
Trexo uses robotic legs attached to a supportive walker frame to gently guide a child’s legs through a natural walking pattern. Therapists remain in control at all times, making real-time adjustments to walking speed, level of support, and step pattern to match each child’s needs. Every child has an individualized profile within the system, allowing sessions to be tailored specifically to them while also tracking detailed walking data over time to monitor progress and guide future therapy.
Why Use The Trexo?
Trexo provides strength and wellness benefits by supporting bone health, circulation, and overall physical wellbeing through upright, repetitive stepping. It also allows children to take significantly more steps than they typically would during a traditional therapy session, giving them increased practice opportunities that can support motor learning and development.
