Welcome to First Steps Wellness Centre
First Steps Wellness Centre (FSWC) is a non-profit organization with charitable status. We opened our doors in 2010 and have become the leading facility in Canada for spinal cord injury and neurorehabilitation. We provide innovative activity-based therapy (ABT) for people with spinal cord injuries and associated disorders. We have adapted our methods to provide ABT to individuals who have experienced stroke or traumatic brain injuries, as well as those with other neurological conditions. Our goal is to help improve the motor function of individuals who have suffered neurological trauma or who have neurological conditions, thus improving their independence and overall quality of life.
We exist to fill the gap in community based intensive ABT for individuals with spinal cord injuries and other associated disorders. ABT helps to promote neuroplasticity and nerve regeneration below the level of injury. We believe that each individual has a potential to recover lost function. FSWC continues to grow and expand to provide the best neurorehabilitation in the country.
We identified a gap in programming for children with neurological conditions, such as Cerebral Palsy, and responded by investing in staff training and program development to better meet this need. In 2016, we launched our comprehensive Children’s Program. In addition to ABT, the program includes the TheraSuit Method®, MNRI Reflex Integration, and Functional Electrical Stimulation.
FSWC programs are custom designed for each client using the above methods, guided by the latest research, and is supported by the use of our specialized equipment. Our exercise therapists have obtained Kinesiology degrees, or degrees in a related field. Many of them have obtained their CSEP-CEP and additional training pertaining to the field of neurorehabilitation.
