Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) Cycling

What is FES?

Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) is an intervention used to help activate weak or paralyzed muscles. Electrical impulses are applied through electrodes, which are placed over specific muscle groups of the arms or legs, which causes the muscle to contract. The use of FES in combination with a specialized bike allows the stimulation to be timed in a coordinated sequence to produce a smooth, repetitive pedaling motion. This allows individuals to participate in cycling, even when voluntary muscle movement is limited. The intensity and timing of the stimulation is adjusted to each individual, allowing sessions to be tailored to therapeutic goals while prioritizing comfort and safety.

Who is FES for?

FES can be very beneficial for many people who experience neurological symptoms, such as:

To Get Started:

To participate in the FES cycling program, doctor's clearance is required prior to scheduling your initial assessment. At your initial assessment, our therapist will review your documents, and determine if the FES bike is suitable for you. Participants are welcome to bring their own electrodes, or purchase them through FSWC.

Use of the FES bikes are available by appointment only. If you have someone attending your FES session with you, our staff can teach them how to properly hook you up to the bike.

If you are unsure if you are a candidate for our program or if you have further questions please do not hesitate to contact us. We would love to hear from you.
